Intentional Camera Movement
Thought I would add my little experiment. This is like when your toddler brings you an abstract crayon drawing of the family cat. The talent isn’t necessarily there, but the enthusiasm is. Feel free to print these and tape them to your refrigerator door.
I read an article about this and decided to gave it a whirl. These were taken at night outside my apartment door. I took my cellphone camera, and did what the article said to do. I then put them in Lightroom and went crazy with the color sliders. There wasn’t a plan, I just fiddled with the sliders until I thought it looked cool. This was a fun one-off project, and I may play around with it some more. Maybe with a little more subtle movement and less psychedelic color.
Edit….the last two were taken at sunset

Wow! Thanks for the references. Ms. Overton’s work is spectacular. I will also spend some time with Mr. Brown as well. When I first did this, I thought it was some sort of novelty thing, like Pet Rocks. I have since learned that this is serious stuff, like doing watercolors with a camera.

Have you played around with it?

Just went to your portfolio. Great stuff. I really liked the Ford Trimotor Airplane.
Edit.. I also liked “Echoes of Autumn”, the leaf on the water. That’s first rate.
Edit 2…The more I look, the more I like…”Night Driving To Nowhere” and “Counting Angels” are superb.

RF,
Thanks!
Go to the Overton and Brown sites in Dean’s post above. Amazing work.

Also went to your portfolio site. Wonderful photos. The “London Eye” Ferris wheel and the Sydney Opera House stood out to me. Well done.

Well done Dale. I really like the last two. Looks like art to me.

Jack,
Thanks! I’m going to keep fooling around with this. I like the watercolor painting look that this technique produces. Take a look at Ms. Overton’s work in the link above.

I have a question that hopefully someone can help me with. It concerns the magenta/purple colors, particularly in the last picture. The first two were taken of the building across from me, and the guy has a purple neon sign or lamp or something, and had his window open. That accounts for the purple in those two. The last picture is of the entrance drive into the apartment complex, and it is just a street shot with trees, grass, etc. No purple colors in the scene at all. Remember that I just moved the color sliders at random without a plan other than what I thought looked cool. I’m sure I jacked the tint slider way up, but if there was no purple colors in the scene to begin with, how did the purple get in the picture? My wild guess is that it accentuated some purple wavelengths that I can’t see with my naked eye. Anybody got any ideas?

Edit…..Okay, I may have just answered my question. I went into LR and took an old picture and jacked up the tint slider, and it added a purple tint to everything. Not to the extent that my last picture above has, but more like a global purple sheen over everything. Maybe LR just adds color instead of enhancing what’s there. I need to study this stuff instead of being a chimpanzee with the sliders.

Thanks for all responses.
