I am embarrassed to say that having lived here almost 72 years this was my first visit to Painted Hills at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. These photos were from a mid-day photo scouting trip. I think golden hour would be best for this location as I am oriented ENE.

Except this photo is oriented W.

Very nice! Even if it isn’t golden hour, it’s beautiful country. Thanks for taking us along with you.

Edit: In the last photo, what are the dark streaks? Is that a coal seam coming through the other sediment, or some other rock type?

Darn it Dean. Now another place added to the “list”. Great set, hope you get there for golden hour soon.

Dean,
I was born and raised in NYC, spent about half my life there and I've NEVER been to the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty (among many other places). I think that we all fail to see what may be right in front of our faces.

MikeZ is correct. We often don’t see what’s in front of us. My wife and I have lived in Savannah pretty much all our lives, and it wasn’t until we took one of those tourist tours of the city that we saw it in a different light. All it takes sometimes is to change your perspective. Both of us now have an appreciation for the history and architecture of where we live, and now one of my favorite things to do is go out and photograph old buildings. The trick is to just get out there and look for stuff, isn’t it?

Manganese oxide? (well, that's one source of black stuff)

Nice images Dean. I am also be a member of the "have lived nearby but never visited club". On a clear day, I can look out of my home office window and see the Swiss Alps. But, after living here for over 16 years, I have never been in the Swiss Alps.

This has been a recent reflection when at local points of interest to capture. I wonder if folks walking or driving by even know there's something unique in their midst.
