Whilst in camera store yesterday in big smoke idle chatter with another guy waiting.

Fellow canon user and I "think" ive got his comment correct.

Auto ISO which I use he said important that you have increments in menu set at one full stop not thirds it does crazy thing to images when at thirds.

Told him I had no idea of the issue mines at full stop anyway. R5 its a issue he said not sure if r5i or R5ii

Said I had a second hand R5i no issue and he sort of changed subject to oh never buy second hand always someones problem blah blah....

So kinda figured his iso comment might be a fallacy.

Probably something he think he may have heard from the cousin of a friend on a Social Media platform like Yahoo! Answers.

Should have asking what he was smoking and if you could have some. I don’t even see where you’d set that. It shows range, but not increment. 🤨

Couldn’t find it elsewhere, either.

The only reference I found for 1/3 stop increments is for manual:

I have read it can cause slight under or over exposure depending on what side of that 3rd you are on. Pretty insignificant with our modern day sensors and NR apps. No biggie for older bodies either.

There is some info that the dynamic range curve suffers a kink at certain ISOs. Normally when you increase the ISO, DR goes down. But at particular ISOs, in some sensors, instead of the DR getting less, it increases. Which is fine. Conversely, if you lower the ISO, if it is that particular ISO, the DR will unexpectedly decrease. A small amount.

This phenomenon happens at low ISOs where we have a ton of DR.

We all want more DR, even if we don't know what it is, or particularly need it. :p In practical terms, it is of no consequence unless you are digging detail out of deep shadows.

This is an interesting topic - I had no idea that DR could suffer (or improve) at different ISO settings. It's also time to make ensure that ISO increments are set to full stops. Thanks for the info.

Yes with all the control we have with our apps I’m not sure that would concern me too much either unless I was still shooting with a Kodak Brownie. 🙂 I heard Kodak did have a digital brownie. 😜

Was that a FW update? Try downloading manual online.
That is the online manual, I have it on speed dial.
Search for C.Fn1. In my manual (R5 firmware 2.2.0) it is on page 829. Custom Function Settings 1
Yeah, I found it. Silly me - I was looking for ISO settings under…ISO Settings. 🙄

Hmm, why not show us an example of identical pics but one is full stop ISO and the other not?
