Question for the board...

The manual states:

"With this feature, automatic shooting in continuous shooting drive mode is already in progress before you press the shutter button completely, after you have pressed it halfway for a moment. [Pre-Continuous Shooting] is displayed on the shooting screen during pre-continuous shooting."

Is there any way to move this function (pre-continuous activation) to the AF-ON button (like Sony & Nikon)?

Thanks!

Yes.

AF-ON is my assigned button for birds-in-flight (saved as C3).
These settings are based on "M" mode (manual with auto-ISO).
  • Time Value — Tv
  • electronic shutter
  • 1/3200 second
  • Tv adjusted by Main Dial (behind shutter).

  • Drive Mode
  • pre-continuous shooting
  • H+ (high-speed continuous)
  • Drive mode adjusted by lens AF Point button (furthest right).

  • Auto Focus — AF
  • AF Servo
  • BBF : eye detect — AF-ON button (furthest left)
  • BBF : spot — AE Lock (asterisk) button (middle)

  • Aperture Value — Av
  • largest aperture for lens
  • Av adjusted by lens Control Ring (on lens).

  • ISO
  • auto ISO
  • ISO adjusted by Quick Control Dial #2 (surrounding Mode dial).

  • Exposure Compensation — EC
  • Exposure compensation adjusted by Quick Control Dial #1 (surrounding Set button).

Most Important (in my opinion!):
  • Save the settings to a Custom Shooting Mode (C1, C2, C3).
  • Set M-Fn button (behind shutter) to "C".
  • Pressing M-Fn will now cycle through C1 ⇒ C2 ⇒ C3 ⇒ C1 ⇒ .

I hope this helps.

I dont think you can move it to a button, but i get by this by having it in the my menu, ensure this page is selected before shooting. I have the DOF button set to bring up menu, and then turn on/off pre-capture using this method, quick and easy. If anyone does find a way to assign pre-capture to a button please let us all know :)

Please note the third bullet point in the “Most Important” comments in post #2.

Assign pre-continuous shooting to your choice of C1, C2, C3 AND set that M-Fn button to “C”.

Now pressing M-Fn will instantaneously switch pre-continuous ON/OFF.

There is no need to take your eye from the viewfinder, or turn a wheel whilst holding a button, or anything equally complicated. Just jab the M-Fn button… that’s it!

Thanks Canon!

I think the heart of the question is whether or not pre-shooting can be engaged by depressing the AF-ON butting instead of the shutter button. I don't know the answer off the top of my head or I'd post it, but I think that's what he's looking for.

Yup, this is what I'm looking for! Thanks for clarifying!

Thanks to Mr. Berry - Yes, I had pre-programmed several modes and have been happily toggling thru them!

I wrote to Canon USA and received the following reply:

"The [Pre-recording] feature can be assigned to the [AF-ON] button in video mode. This cannot be done in still shooting, however. This option is found in the green menu tab #1. You should see [Customize buttons for shooting]."

So, it looks like I'll have to wait for a firmware update to get this function.

Hi David I am interested on this setting, I am getting my R5 II tomorrow and me too shoot with back button focus, isn’t by simply turning ON the pre-capture from the menu should work? AF-ON, set like you have mentioned on post #2 and shutter button on metering only, if I have the pre capture enabled that will not work? So to make it work (pre capture on back button) I have to assign it to one of the C. And set M-fn to C I think I like your set up. Thanks - Peter
