So why doesn't HIEF gain more traction? All modern Canon cameras have it. Yes I use C-Raw. For long term storage I use JPG. Almost three decades of pictures. RJ
Because HEIF is not generally supported by legacy OS's, and other programs without converting them. Lot's of folks are still using Windows 10 and probably some XP users out there as well.

macOS is a bit harder to locate accurate stats as to how many users per OS's.
 
I Googled this and this is what it returned:

Which Should You Use?

I don’t quite understand the 10-bit and 8-bit part in terms of gradient and banding. Maybe some with more knowledge can chime in. I’m happy with craw and jpeg. Maybe heif is better for phone cameras.

If you take a photo on an iPhone, it uses HEIF technology to compress the image, but saves the final file to your storage with a .heic extension.

Regarding banding:

Photos are made of pixels, and pixels are made of RGB data. JPGs have 8 bits for each primary color. The bits refer to how big the number can be. So each color can vary from hex 00000000 to hex 11111111. In decimal, that is 0 to 255. Since there are three primary colors, the total colors available is 256 x 256 x 256 = 16.7 million.

In some photos, there can be areas with very similar color - for instance a blue sky. In such cases, swaths of neighboring pixels can be identical. That can appear as banding.

A 10 bit photo has four times as many of each primary color available, so the banding will be much finer and much harder to see.

In practice, we rarely see banding in our photos because the 8x8x8 bits in JPGs usually provide enough colors, and besides, images are broken up by noise which means the areas are not really as uniform as they appear.

Thanks for explaining that. I have a photo that has been bugging me for a while. There is some banding in the blue sky, and I can’t figure out why. Your explanation makes sense. I have messed around with it in Lightroom, and no luck. What can I do, if anything, to avoid it or fix it? I took the photo with my R50 and my 18-45 kit lens shortly after I got them, if that helps. See the blue sky below.

It would be interesting to see the original with EXIF. Was the original overexposed?

To reduce the banding, try adding noise to the sky.

I have the sky saved as a mask, and the only instance where I can remove the bands is when I jack up the exposure in the sky, and that just turns the sky white. How do you add noise? I went to the denoise slider, and took it to extremes either way, and can’t tell much difference. In retrospect, this photo may not have been the best example to use.

It looks like the sky was overexposed. There are quite a few pixels that are maxxed out and don't have faithful data. Given that it is a JPG, it will be difficult to fix.

In Lightroom Classic, there is a slider that will increase or decrease the grain. It is under Effects. You can use it to increase noise (= grain). But it is not helpful in this image.

In Photoshop, you can do a sky replacement on this image. I tried it and it does a pretty good job.

Yes, JPGs have EXIF data. The data is shown below your photo in this thread, but I don't see it in the file.
 
Thanks for the analysis. Looks like I need to pay more attention to exposure. This particular photo was taken a while back before I was aware of the histogram, and what it does. Again, thanks for the advice.

OK! :)

The easiest fix is to go over there and shoot it again, if you can. In RAW! :D Otherwise Photoshop sky replacement will do it. Go create your own sky photo and combine it with this photo in Photoshop. That way the photo is still all yours.

This was essentially a throwaway shot, the only reason I kept it was to pull it out and fool with it every now and then to figure out what I did wrong. Your explanation went a long way. Don’t have Photoshop, so replacing the sky is out, and I don’t use Lightroom Classic, I use Lightroom CC/Mobile. I’ll look for the grain slider if it’s in LR Mobile. Now that you have clued me in to what’s happening, I’ll pay more attention to exposing for the sky.

The iPhones IQ is quite good. in 2015 (I think) I got a Canon G11 for shooting an event. I never used it as it is just too small for me. Two years ago we went on a short trip and only I took it and my iPhone. I preferred the iPhone over the G11 for night shots even though it was set to RAW. I sold it. One day when I can't hold up a full system I'll have a look at modern P&S.
