Your R System Images - March 2025

Welcome to our Canon RF Shooters Forum

Be apart of something great, join today!

In a break from grandparental duties, we took a walk along Wellington’s south coast (the Red Rocks Walk), and despite the calm ocean, Sinclair Head was piling up some multi-metre waves in a classic point break.

Hi Gareth,

Wow, very eye-catching captures (and breathtaking activities) in evidence here. Beautiful colours amid those punchy whites.

Impressive - thank you for sharing... 🙂

Phew - that took a bit of catching up! (We need a coffee). Thank you for all of the contributions in our absence - a busy start to the year for Team Moore.

Our final images for this month come from the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Doncaster, England.

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PL Elite, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs PAI. Compilations feature Karen R7 and Phil R5).

Any editing suggestions for these? I got them after a day traveling the Capay Valley just northwest of Sacramento, CA. Definitely a place to bookmark for later.

A few shots from last month. First up, a grey squirrel perched on our deck with a snowy background.

Next is an eastern bluebird drinking from our heated birdbath during a snowstorm.

The "test shot" that may well become the "only" shot....

This was a test of an idea I have for a shot like this at sunset - long exposure to get light trails from the cars on the Interstate behind. The day I took this, it was at noon, with blazing sunshine. I thought I try and see how it looked with just blurred cars in the background, but with no ND filter, it just wasn't happening, but I took this test shot. I thought I'd play with it, so I black and white-ified it.

I was back yesterday, when it was solid overcast, so I thought I'd try again....and I couldn't find the spot! I know almost exactly where it should be but couldn't find it again!

Never a dull moment watching 4 and 5 year old kids play soccer. Some have a bit of experience, for others it's the first season. Emotions run high, some are terrified to be out in the scramble to kick the ball!

Great series of photos Chris! Having coached our two girls at that age (and to high school), you captured the full spectrum of U6 soccer; the smiles, crying, and extracurricular activities. I really like the soccer "snow cone"; that girl also seems like she's a strong player, so she's the leader with the ball, being followed by the rest of the players. That's a fun age to watch. I'm sure the highlight of the game for the kids were snacks after the game...

Likely my last day shooting Portugal. 10 months of slumping until we get back. I have to get to more events like car racing, model plane shows, etc this year.

Great in flight images! It may be impertinent of me, but I assume you use back button focusing. Do you use two or three buttons? I've been having problems with setting up my R6mii for BIF.
Regards to slumping... as I've said, I know what you mean, it looks like you had a great visit to Portugal, but you always have awesome pictures from your other home as well.

I shoot a little differently. I paid a lot of money for this new eye focus tech so I believe in letting it do its job first. I only intervene when necessary. I shot using the shutter button for both AF and Metering with my 7D for 5 years. I never struggled keeping the shutter half pressed while tracking and bursting. When I got my 7D2 and after a bunch of forum chat I decided to map AF to the AF-ON button. That took a bit of work as I was used to the other way.

I got my R5 (which is sold) and R7 and R6II. While trying out different options with this new tech I decided to go back to keeping both AF and Metering on the shutter button. What saves me is I use the Preview AF. It's like pressing a BBF but you don't need to press anything. It will find an eye even if you don't press any buttons. So if I'm tracking and shooting and I lift my finger past half way off the shutter button it takes over and AF continues. This frees up the BBF buttons for other purposes.

I pretty much start in Whole Area and eye detect 95% of the time and let the camera do its thing. If it is struggling I then use the AF-ON to override eye detect AF. Just plain AF. No eye detect. While many like to use Spot Focus for that override I use Zone AF. I don't need any precise area of my subject to be in focus. I just the subject in focus. I feel using more AF points for that purpose is just better. I never move the AF point/s around while doing that. It's too slow for me. I move the whole camera so the AF cluster lands on my subject. When the subject is in focus I let the AF-ON go and the eye snaps in. For stills I recompose but for BIF as long as the bird is in the frame. I try my best to compose but that can be tough with BIF. I crop later in post.

Sometimes for more precision I need single point or spot focus. For this I use the * button to cycle between those and whole area AF. In those two modes I'm also using Eye Detect AF just like in whole area AF.

The reason I like my set up is I only use the BBF if I need to. Mostly the AF-ON. I just toggle it as many times as I need to get the subject in focus. While mucking around I was shooting these two birds on posts. If I wanted the bird on the right in focus I pressed the AF-ON and got the AF point on it. When the bird was in focus I released the AF-ON and the eye snapped in. I did the same thing to the other bird. I first tried single point first and I could even put the AF point in the post the bird was sitting on and the eye snapped after releasing the AF-ON. Then I tried Zone AF and that worked just as good for me. Even faster because there were more AF points. Sure sometimes it picks up the back area or it won't work as well in thick foliage. Then I use the * button to switch for single or spot AF. It's great for BIF.
