As promised, some more images from our recent visit to Belvoir Castle, Grantham, Leicestershire, England.

Photography is permitted inside the castle! (Thank you to the Duke and Duchess of Rutland... :) ).

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PhotoLab Elite/ ViewPoint and Adobe Lightroom Classic/ Photoshop).

You can find out more about Belvoir Castle by clicking Here.

1. The history of Belvoir (‘beautiful view’) Castle dates to the 11th century. Anglo-Saxon locals, unable to pronounce the French for Belvoir (‘Bel-vwer’), called it ‘Bee-va’ and the convention has stuck (remember this if you ever visit!).

RF-SP-1.jpg

2. Four different castles have stood here since 1067, when the original Norman castle was built. The present one was constructed between 1801-1832 for the 5th Duke and Duchess of Rutland.

RF-SP-2.jpg

3. The ceiling of the Picture Room. The art collection features work by Poussin, Dürer, Holbein, Gainsborough, Rubens and includes Teniers’ Proverbs.

RF-SP-3.jpg

4. The Elizabeth Saloon. This is the Withdrawing Room to which ladies would withdraw after dinner, leaving the gentlemen in the State Dinning Room. The French panelling dates from about 1730.

5. The State Dinning Room (inset, the enormous punch bowl). Belvoir Castle is considered to be one of the finest examples of Regency architecture in England and is the home of the 11th Duke and Duchess of Rutland.

6. ‘Below Stairs’. Belvoir castle has featured in various movies, including the Da Vinci Code and Young Victoria.

These Oystercatchers have been nesting on this boat for several years now. We always wonder how they get their chicks down onto the water? Do they give them a shove?

Hi Phil,

A fantastic set of images - thank you for sharing. :)

We were at Oxburgh Hall a few weeks back (some images from our visit may be appearing on a site near here in the future!). What a truly fascinating and spectacular place (inside and out).

Nice shots. DXO is good with persecutive. Amazing how ornate these places are. Kitchen is bigger than my first house. Possibly last as well.

Hi Only RF,

Cheers - appreciated! I'm still trying to hone my use of the ViewPoint tools (particularly with the RF16mm, which can get a bit wild), but I'm hoping practice makes perfect... :D

As to Belvoir Castle, it was truly spectacular and absolutely dripping in photographic opportunities - we were grinning from ear to ear when they said we could snap away inside.

As to the size, scale and day-to-day practicalities of living in a place like this - it was all a bit bewildering and, frankly, we wouldn't know where to begin...

Hey P&K,
great shots of the castle, and as I commented once before it is fascinating to see how the "upper" classes lived not so long ago. In the states, we have some similar style homes in Newport Rhode Island, the gilded age summer retreats of the uber rich (Asters and Vanderbilts, etc.). More rooms than a mid-sized hotel with a staff to match. Makes the average person and their home feel so insignificant (and poor :)).

Hi Mike,

Cheers - appreciated!

The places we visit are impressive (but they're not for us!). Many are now managed by The National Trust, English Heritage or CADW (Wales), but some - like Belvoir - are still family owned homes (we visited as 'Historic Houses' members).

(We can just about afford all the various memberships... 😂 ).

The ones over in the US must also be fascinating properties.

Hi Elaine,

A wonderful set of images, so much intent in each one, it's very difficult to choose a favourite (but we're going for the last one - a sublime composition). Thank you for sharing... :)

Thank you, it was such a beautiful place for photography and I'm glad I was able to capture some of it.

The end of the school year here in Texas is this week so lots of events for my grandkids like awards ceremonies, graduation and dances. Here are a few of my granddaughter and friends the night of their school ball. These 14 year old girls show a lot more leg than when I was a teenager. My granddaughter is the one in purple and showing off all the money her parents have spent getting her teeth straightened out!

Yes I shot my goddaughter and her sisters grads. I figured the next stop would be the red carpet at the oscars. Well maybe 10 years ago. These days those stars may well not wear any cloths at all and save some money.

Hi Chris,

A terrific set of shots - we trust all the subjects were suitably impressed (and delighted)!

There's a lot of joy and character being showcased here - the future is in their hands... :)

Yes, kids and parents were happy. I upload all these school pictures (sports, etc.) to a Flickr album for the parents and kids to download. I did find it amusing that only one boy was invited to the dinner at a restaurant with the ladies..... lucky man!

On the same theme of kids and the end of the school year. Last night my wife and I attended the local Middle School Athletic Awards ceremony. Our 8th grade granddaughter participated in just about every sport they offered this year, she also was a cheerleader for the football team. She asked me to not only take pictures of her throughout the year at these events but also the others so I even photographed 100's of the kids.

The ceremony had a slideshow and I was amused as about 90% of the images projected were mine. They even picked up my images for the yearbook, with my blessing of course.

I had planned to just get a few shots of my granddaughter as she was supposed to get an award or 2 but in the end I just stepped up and took pictures of all the kids receiving awards as the school had not planned on a photographer being there.

I had some fun before the program started shooting candids of the kids who were seated in chairs on the gym floor. Typical teens, looking at their phones and taking selfies. It was fun watching them and catching their expressions, sort of like street photography indoors.

I shot with my Canon R7 and the Tamron 18-400mm lens. I find it a good combination and the large zoom range allowed me to get tight closeups as well as wide angle shots for the groups of kids on stage holding up their certificates.

1. The construction of Felbrigg Hall began in Tudor times, but development continued for centuries and it features Jacobean architecture and Georgian interiors. The Hall contains one of the largest collections in the National Trust.

2. The extensive grounds include a widely renowned walled garden with an 18th century orangery.

Great set, and I'm still stunned at the grandeur of these old "houses".

Hi Mike,

Cheers - much appreciated!

Felbrigg was overflowing with photographic opportunities, both inside and out. The house was absolutely crammed with wonderful things - as the blurb suggested, it holds an amazing collection.
