We hope you enjoy creating fantastic images this month!

Have fun - but stay safe and well… :)

Service Announcements:
Don’t Panic! We’re now away until mid-November-ish so this thread has been posted early - the October thread remains open for image posts and comments.

Secondly, due to ongoing family support commitments our responses on here will be minimal for the time being - the lack of a comment from us is not a sign of any disfavour! Normal service will resume (eventually) but for now, please bear with us - ’tis life…

Any R System images can be posted. If you would like to say something about the subject, settings, or processing, that will be very welcome.

Remember, you don't have to only post things you took this month - sometimes people don't have time to process/ edit images straight away. (Think of it more as an ‘images I’d like to post here this month’ sort of thing). Images taken with non-R System lenses are also very welcome.

Images posted on this thread will also be available to view in the dedicated Monthly R System Images Gallery.

Commenting on people’s posts is encouraged as it keeps everyone interested and coming back. (Please be considerate, thoughtful and constructive).

Finally, please post in accordance with the RF Shooters Community Guidelines.

Thank you!

Images from Carew Castle (Welsh: Castell Caeriw) and Tidal Mill, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PL E/ ViewPoint, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs Studio. As we cycled to this venue and Karen carried the cycle locks/ change of shoes in her pack, these shots are all by Phil).

You can find out more about Carew Castle and Carew Tidal Mill by clicking Here.

1. While defensive fortifications have been discovered which date back to the Iron Age, the Norman castle has its origins in a stone keep built by Gerald de Windsor around 1100. (Gerald was made castellan of Pembroke Castle by Arnulf of Montgomery in the first Norman invasion of Pembrokeshire).

2. The original outer walls were timber, and only the keep was of stone. This still exists in the later structure as the ‘Old Tower’. Gerald's son William took the name ‘de Carew’, and in the middle of the 12th century created an enclosure with stone walls incorporating the original keep and a Great Hall inside it.

3. The current high-walled structure with a complex of rooms and halls was created in about 1270 by Nicholas de Carew. At this time, the outer ward was also walled in. The de Carew family fell on hard times in the post-Black Death period (after 1350) and mortgaged the castle. It then passed through various owners.

4. During the English Civil War (1642-51), it was refortified by Royalists although south Pembrokeshire was strongly Parliamentarian. After changing hands three times, the south wall was pulled down to render the castle indefensible to Royalists. The castle was finally re-purchased by the de Carew family in 1607.

5. The de Carews continued to occupy the eastern wing until 1686, after which the castle was abandoned and allowed to decay - with much of it being looted for building stone. Since 1984 Cadw (the Welsh Government's historic environment service) has funded its partial repair and ongoing conservation.

6. Carew Tidal Corn Mill is the only restored tidal mill in Wales, with evidence suggesting a mill was in existence on the site by 1542. It is also called the ‘French Mill’ and this may have arisen from its use of French burrstone millstones. Causeway walls and floodgates were restored by Sir John Carew in about 1615. Use of the mill ended in 1937, with the building becoming derelict until it was restored in 1972. The Mill now houses a museum.
