1. Montacute House, completed in 1601, features gothic and Elizabethan Renaissance architecture.

2. It was built for Sir Edward Phelips, who made his fortune as a lawyer. (The large frieze depicts the ridicule of a local man for being henpecked).

3. Sir Edward entered Parliament in 1584. He was speaker of the House of Commons 1604 - 1611 before promotion to Master of the Rolls.

4. Edward made the opening statement for the prosecution against Guy Fawkes and the other gunpowder plotters in one of the trials of the century.

5. The 172-foot long gallery spans the entire top floor and is the longest such room in England. It now functions as part the National Portrait Gallery.

6. Montacute House and Estate were acquired by the National Trust in 1931.

This was our 'Motorway Service Area' as we travelled between campsites during a tour last year - well worth the (slight) detour needed... :)
