Show of hands, who's planning to buy one and what's your reason over other great bodies like R3 or basically any other RF body?

Or are you still waiting to hear the price before deciding?

For me, I'm fairly certain I'll get one since I shoot lot of sports and my current combo R5+1DX(1) would greatly improve by having two modern mirrorless bodies. The shooting itself wouldn't justify the price I'm expecting but luckily my day job helps to offset any costs I have to put towards the gear.

Most likely I'll pre-order as soon as possible since I have big tournament in July. Hoping to get one for me before all the Olympics shooters snatch all the inventory.

I'll pass. It's more than I need as a hobbyist, and my R5 still has features I've yet to explore.

As a wildlife shooter, I need the 45mps of the R5. So, No

If i had mega money would prefer to spend it on a RF 100/300 2.8 L rather than body

But R1 a no and above mentioned lens a No

I am more than happy with my R5. I think the R1 is greed more towards professional sports shooters. My main genre is landscapes, Milky Ways and a bit of wildlife and birds (probably 60-20-20% of those genres). I'm not ever really sure I'll upgrade to the R5ii if/whgen it comes out. I really don't have any complaints about my R5 for the stuff I shoot. I think I'f I were included to spend more money at this point, it would be on more RF glass.

No way. It will I am sure be aimed at pro's ... and amateurs who have to have it. A bit Sony A9 ... but loads will buy it. I won't. R3 ii maybe lol

Well I was hoping R1 was out within next 2 months but doesn't look like it so I cave in and bought R3. Hopefully I don't regret that when I see the R1 specs and price.

Having shot and carried two R3s for quite a while now, I can’t really think of what an R1 could offer me except maybe a better viewfinder auto brightness and a a vertical grip and buttons that is/are more similar to the horizontal grip. I may be in the minority, but I have large hands and miss the size of the 1dx series bodies. The R3 is a little cramped in some ways. But none of those add up to a reason for me to replace them. The R3s are great, have plenty of resolution, and I find the 30 fps is sometimes a bit too much.

I think you’re gonna love the r3

I've shot with R3 and I know I'll love it. Just very curious to see what R1 ends up being since it's difficult to think what they could really improve besides some minor items.

Many years ago on another forum, someone was feeling great about the gear they had and saying that it was hard to believe how it could possibly be improved. Some of us thought about it and it wasn't at all obvious what the advances might be. But today we see there were many. As an example, the R5 has way more pixels, and eye detect AF. And the R5 seems old technology now.

I don't know what the R1 will bring. I bet it will be impressive. I expect it will be a massive thing, though, and that is not for me. I need a lightweight body.

See how silly they are with the pricing - would like to think it's build quality would be better, up to 1 series standard at least. But yes - highly likely I will end up with one for trackside work

Perhaps, but we had AF eye detect in pro bodies over a decade ago and most everyone could guess they'd improve that while upping megapixels. Even the eye control wasn't too much of a shocker, though it had been 25 years since they'd implemented it.

My R3 came yesterday, took it quickly out today. The 30fps does help getting the impact timing (on my sports) just right but downside is that I'll soon have crazy amount of pics to cull through.

I have found turning my rate button (and my dof button) into a “lock image” button helps significantly. I can view a burst, lock a keeper or two, and delete the rest without the camera ever leaving my eye. Later, in Photo Mechanic, I can select tagged images (locking is a tag) and quickly pull my keepers from whatever chaff I didn’t delete.

My sport is too active during tournaments though, I wouldn't have time to review every burst, hence I wouldn't be able to delete pics until back home and culling. But in general if you can do like that, it saves you lot of time in the other end.

I love the idea of X-sync in the 1/1000+ speed range, but I don't think that is enough to get me up to the sales counter.

However, besides new features like that Canon will lure R3 owners to the R1 by incorporating the features that the newer, cheaper cameras already have that the R3 lacks, like pre-burst shooting and USB tethering. Which I think is kind of sandbagging on Canon's part, but I guess that's just part of the game.

Hopefully the pre-shot isn’t the wonky implementation Canon has rolled out thus far. Currently the images are sequestered in a weird group you have to pull them out of, rather than just be images on the card.

First full day tournament with R3. The 30fps really helps to capture the impact but also I'll end up with insane amount of pictures to cull.

Focusing loves to jump to the faces in the background, I wish they had some "helmets" focus to replace eye-focus so it'd better know to stick to the players.

I was fighting Eye AF yesterday at a taekwondo festival. It’d be nice if we could adjust the settings on Eye AF and people detection like we can almost everything else. When it works, it’s amazingly sticky. When it gets a wild hair and focuses on some random person in the background, it’s u fortunately amazingly sticky.

Since vehicle tracking has helmets as part of its visual reference dictionary (not sure of term), and people if it doesn’t see vehicles, it’d be nice to be able to set the camera’s hierarchy myself. Make a custom AF that focuses first on eyes, then helmets, then people, then whatever.

Some subjects are not suitable for eye or face detection, and you need to know when to turn it off and switch to Zone AF or something like that. I realize the limbs and weapons will be closer and they will take the focus in certain cases, so maybe try spot AF and keep it on the face you want? I don't know the best answer, but I do know that tracking isn't for everything.

They tend to move plenty so using zone-AF would be challenging. I do that on my 1DX but the R-series tracking AF seems to give better results.

Zone sucks when photographing sparring/fights/combat. Great way to ensure something is in focus, but what it will be is a crapshoot. And in the caves that so much of these sports inhabit, aperture is usually wide open so there’s little margin for error.

No on the R1.

Yes on the R5Mk2.

OK - R3 SHOULD have had 2 CF card slots, but that is not enough to "upgrade". Love the size of the R3. Cannot think of one feature or combination thereof to attract me to the R1. Correct me if I am missing something.

I look forward to reading the threads of "I didn;t think I would upgrade to R1 but boy am I glad I did" to reconsider :)

Only if I win a lottery.
I second that. It's a tool to make money out it and so far, photography is a costly passion for me.

I just traded in my R7 for the R6 Mark I so I'm like a little boy after Christmas enjoying my "new" toy!

Eventually in 10 years if I still alive I may trade in my R6 for an R1. 😆
