While we wait for the snow to slowly melt, this morning we were treated to some fog :) The far bank of the river is only 3 miles away. I also had a tug boat crawl by.
The river is full of ice at bottom of the pictures.

Images from our recent(ish) stay at Paxton House, Paxton, Berwick upon Tweed, Scotland (but only just!).

Whilst the guided tour of the house is absolutely fascinating, photography is not permitted inside.

(Shot raw and processed with: DxO PL E/ Viewpoint/ Nik, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs Studio/ Studio 2. Compilations feature Karen - R7 and Phil - R5).

You can find out more about Paxton House by clicking Here, the Union Chain Bridge Here and the Royal Border Bridge Here.

1. Paxton House is one of the finest Palladian houses in the United Kingdom. It was built on a new site high above the River Tweed from 1758 onwards for Patrick Home of Billie, who inherited a fortune from his parents in the 1750s during the reign of King George II.

2. Patrick had hoped to marry his Prussian sweetheart, Sophie de Brandt, but their love match was prevented. Patrick sold Paxton to his cousin Ninian Home who moved into the house in 1768 and, together with his wife, Penelope, commissioned Britain’s most fashionable designers, Robert and James Adam and cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale to create lavish neo-classical interiors.

3. Sadly, it should be noted that Ninian had gained much of his wealth from the utterly abhorrent Caribbean slave based economy. Having actively campaigned against the abolition of the slave trade, he was killed by rebels during the uprising of 1795 on Grenada.

4. The house passed through successive generations to John Home Robertson, a Labour Member of Parliament. In 1988, he gave the House, most of its contents and 80 acres of land to the Nation, establishing the independent Paxton House Trust.

5. A short stroll along the banks of the River Tweed sits the charming Union Chain Bridge, which spans the river between Horncliffe, Northumberland, England and Fishwick, Borders, Scotland. When opened in 1820 it was the longest wrought iron suspension bridge in the world with a span of 137 metres (449 ft).

6. A further 6 miles down the River Tweed lies Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, England, where can be found the hugely impressive Royal Border Bridge. Designed by Robert Stephenson, the foundation stone was laid on 15 May, 1847. It was opened by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on 29 August, 1850. The bridge is entirely in England - the East Coast Main Line crosses the English – Scottish border at Marshall Meadows, 2.5 miles north of Berwick.

Hi MIke,

Bleak - but nonetheless fascinating - scenes.

(There's something strangely captivating about staring into the unknown).

Well done for getting out there - and thank you for sharing... 🙂

Hi Don,

Cheers - appreciated! :)

Karen's wonderful capture of the railroad bridge (plus obliging train!) was a joy to process.
