I am seriously thinking of getting a Canon FD 800mm f/5.6 S.S.C. asking price $895 $1000.

"Comes with a handful of filters, lens hood, and a hard shell carrying case. Lens appears to be fungus free, without scratches, and in overall great condition. Case is sturdy, and filters appear all clear as well."

It is local, so I will be able to view it before I buy it.

My concern is that it's not an L-series glass and being a 800mm I would most likely be out of doors. (I definitely cannot afford the RF version!)

I met with the guy today and I checked the lens out. It looks 100% clean. Heavy as hell too!

I will be picking it up next weekend for $850.00 (US). and then worry about how to mount.

I always find it's better to seek forgiveness, than ask for permission ;)

But you can get the RF 800 f/11 for the same price. Far lighter and I'm not sure how well AF will perform with an FD. The great advantage with the FD is obviously speed. However these days with modern noise reduction tools higher ISO's are not an issue. There is even lens blur which does not give you true bokeh. However even with my 100-500 and 1.4 that puts it at f/10 still produces nice blurred backgrounds.

Depends how much a purist you are. For me the only advantage would be true Bokeh. Also I know that by your work you have far more patience than I do. It sounded good at the start but from my own perspective I'd likely pass. Maybe if I was younger and still had that patience and drive. Younger arms as well but my guess that will be a lens that sits on a tripod?

Manual focus only with this lens.
I will need a gimbal on the tripod to balance the weight (5123g/11.3lbs)

I know from the start that each shot will take time for execution and I am okay with that. I can also use it with my Canon FTb, whereas the RF 800 f/11 I couldn't.

Yes. Kinda like my experimental macro days when I had an MP-E 65mm. It was pretty amazing.

This lens was $1700 in 1977 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/443468112473918/posts/2034265856727461/), and if you adjust that for inflation to todays US dollar, the lens would cost $9,401.14. So price wise, it is a good deal. Image quality, I have no idea how it would stand up on a modern mirrorless Canon. But, maybe that doesn't really matter...you would look extremely cool using it in my opinion.

I learned that it was originally designed to be used at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, which began in 3 days 50 years ago. It would be cool to take the lens back to Montreal and shoot some of Olympic Stadium with it 50 years later.

I have absolutely no comment on the nickname of the stadium being "The Big O". :ROFLMAO: 😊

Olympics in 77. Manual focus and wait to develop film. Last Olympics. Eye detect AF that will also detect goggles, multiple frames per second and images posted all over the world instantly.

In conjunction with the R5 it will be soft at f/5.6 and much sharper at f/8 or f/11. Severe chromatic aberration and "defringe" cannot be fixed with a check in the Remove Chromatic Aberration box and will need to be done manually. I should be able to save this as a Preset to save time.

I'm looking forward to the challenge 🫤

Typically most lenses are sharpest closed by 1 or 2 stops. 1 being the most common. Not sure if an MTF chart would be available for that lens.

I doubt all apps will have lens profiles for CA correction for an older lens. What I found on the internet.

Lateral chromatic aberration. This is the result of the lens focal length differing depending on the wavelength of incoming light. It is seen mainly in the corners and can be readily corrected, either by the camera (in JPEG mode) or by the RAW conversion software. Better lenses show less lateral CA but in the world of digital it's not the problem it once was.

Purple fringing. This is the result of axial colour in the infra-red spectrum being picked up as the blue and to some extent red dyes used in the sensor CFA both pass IR resulting in a purple glow around highlights.

https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/digital-negative.html#Adobe_Lens_Profile_Creator is a link to Adobe Lens Profile Creator. I see that it isn't compatible with newer versions of Mac OS, but it works perfectly well on my Windows 11 machine.

I haven't used it in 10 years or more, but when I used it a long time ago, it was possible to create a custom profile if you took the time and did it carefully step by step.

Do you have any sherpas in your part of Oregon that you could hire to carry it for you? :D

You beat me to the Sherpas joke!
