Relative Dead Things from the Beach - Echinoderms

Once upon a time I had a fossilised sea urchin-type thing. It was found a fair way away from any current beaches.

(I lost my collection of fossils during a rather complicated sequence of house move/relocations.)

Melanistic pīwakawaka/fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa) posing obligingly - which they do*, in shady places. These had about 50% denoise in LRC, but were pretty clean to begin with.

* Getting good pictures of them in flight with a long lens is almost impossible because their darting, fluttering flight as they chase insects on the wing is *really* difficult to follow. One day...

To be honest, I think the clutter helps. So many stories in there. Like one of those old Breughel paintings.

1. Dover Castle commands the Strait of Dover, a position of strategic importance throughout history. The origin of settlement on Castle Hill, where Dover Castle stands, may date to the pre-Roman Iron Age. [Image of 'the king' taken with kind permission].

2. The castle visible today was established by Henry II (r.1154–89), in the decade 1179–89. He spent lavishly, creating the most advanced castle design in Europe.

3. Over the next 800 years its buildings, defences and tunnels were adapted to meet the changing demands of warfare.

4. Castle Hill was shaped into massive defences capped by medieval walls, towers and earthworks which garrisoned an infantry and artillery fortress. Beneath it, a network of tunnels enabled the garrison to move, plan and live in safety.

5. During the Second World War Dover was the nearest town to enemy-occupied territory. In June 1940 Vice-Admiral Ramsay’s naval headquarters were based in tunnels beneath the castle and played a key role in ‘Operation Dynamo’, with the evacuation of 338,226 British and Allied troops from Dunkirk.

6. Around AD 130 the Romans built an octagonal tower-like lighthouse (pharos) on Castle Hill. This was later reused for the church of St Mary in Castro, which dates to around AD 1000.

Great set as usual. I used to do more of that type of shooting and I plan get back into it when we travel.
