Our final images for this month come from a mid-journey stop-off at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Good to see that ants were liking the peony bud (as they generally do).

And a straw flower (Xerochrysum bracteatum, also Helichrysum bracteatum and Bracteantha bracteata). Those taxonomists are going to have to make their collective minds up.

The architecture isn't bad either. Ever been to the Eden Project (Cornwall)?

It's an impressive place both botanically and in terms of architecture. There are so many wonderful things to see and photograph nearby (The Lost Gardens Of Heligan, for one) - and around Cornwall in general. I'm a bit biased, because it's the land of my great-grandfathers, some of whom went to Wales to build things when the tin mines went into decline.

Meanwhile, I took the 100mm out for a spin yesterday...

The local conditions were not that great for the partial lunar eclipse. By the time the Moon rose, the eclipse had already begun... then the waiting for it to rise above the local tree line. Great.

Strong gusty winds and clouds were a challenge so I kept the lens hood off completely.

Maximum eclipse was 21:12 (9:12 pm) local time. I snapped this at 20:48 (8:48 pm) Soon the clouds took over the sky about the Moon.

I had an hour to spare this morning, so I stopped off at a local bush park in the hope of meeting up with a few feathered sort. There were a few calling from the tops of trees — no thanks — plus this fella who posed as stock-still as we were told to for school class photos.

Related species of these strange, but delightful, birds are also known as thick-knees and dikkops. The Merlin Bird ID phone app identifies our Australian birds as Bush Thick-knees .

So be it; however, when Bush Stone-curlews living on Moreton Bay islands are called 'curlews' confusion can result — they're unrelated to our Far Eastern Curlews who should be flapping their way south from Kamchatka right about now.

I guess I am on a working vacation with our family when my granddaughter asked me to take some senior portraits of her, and of course she planned it and brought a few outfits to wear. As we are on holiday in Galveston, she and I went down to the historic Strand this morning. Being early on a Sunday, the cruise ships hadn't deboarded passengers yet and those coming down to leave hadn't arrived so the streets were pretty quiet. Also the sun had just come up so the light was really nice for portraits.

Found some nice architectural elements and after an hour we were really hot and sweaty so we called it a day.

Hard to believe that little newborn granddaughter I held once, is so grown up now!

Ruby Throated Hummingbird (female)

I saw this little one buzzing the birdfeeder and by the time I brought my camera up, it decided to check me out! It literally spent 20 seconds hovering in front of me. Sadly, it kept zipping in for a closer look and then retreating to a safe distance. The camera's subject detection had zero chance to lock on... I'm pretty sure I said the words 'will you please hold still' - and it did! Landed on a tree branch long enough for me to snap a few images. Horrible light, not going to win any prizes, but I'm happy to have this little one say 'hello'.

More excitement in the back forty (Hah!) While waiting to see if the hummingbird's partner would show up, this little one burst out of the woods in full DefCon 1 mode. It took only a few moments before forcing itself through the narrow opening in my neighbor's fence.
