Hi Only RF,

...And now for something completely different!

However, in common with your earlier posts, beautifully captured images of wonderful creatures in their natural environment.

(Plenty of fine detail in evidence, with pleasing subject isolation/ eye-pop/ background blur and lush colours).

Thank you for sharing... :)

A young owl eagerly anticipating breakfast - taken earlier this morning in Hartshill Country Park, Warwickshire, England.

Very well spotted by Karen (but I was the one who had taken a camera... :) ).

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PL Elite, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper TK-9 Panels and Topaz Labs Photo AI/ Studio 2).

Moreton Bay Sunrise …

Sunrise over Moreton Bay, Queensland

From foreground:
  • Brighton Beach — 30 minutes before low tide
  • Pied Oyster Catchers — one in flight (left); four at water's edge (right)
  • Moreton Bay — June water temperature between 20 and 21ºC
  • Moreton Island — 35 km away; world's third largest sand island
  • Clouds over the East Australian Current
  • Our nearest star — as it was eight and a bit minutes before the shutter was pressed (pre-capture comes to the R5!).

Hi David,

That looks like a very fine way to start any day. Living around 2 miles from the calculated centre of England, we're about as far away from the sea as you can get in every direction, so it's always pleasing to see an expansive watery vista - particularly so when it's drenched by a golden dawn.

Thank you for sharing... :)

Hi Don,

Cheers - much appreciated!

This is the first time for a few years that we've enjoyed some sustained owlet sightings. When the pandemic first struck we came upon 2 very young ones peering down at us from high in the trees, we grabbed a couple of (dodgy) long-range shots and with a cheery 'hello mateys' left them in peace. Long story short, we saw them most mornings for the next 6 weeks, by the end of which they were so used to seeing us they actually flew down to meet us when we wandered by - Karen, who had a 7DII/ EF100-400LII combo at the time, had to back off to be able to fit them in the frame. A wonderful experience.

(The current pair of youngsters are nowhere near that relaxed, but they've been joy to spot and observe/ photograph - 'hidden objects' in the woods... :)).

Our final images for this month's thread come from a recent visit to Marwell Zoo, Winchester, Hampshire, England.

The compilations are a mix of R5 - Phil and R7 - Karen, so please ignore the exif data.

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PL Elite, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs Photo AI).

You can find out more about Marwell Zoo by clicking Here.

1. Our #1 targets were the Cloud Leopards (which we totally failed to spot on our previous visit). Horrific wire fence/ subject issues aside, we got these.

2. We can see (and hear) you...

4. I suspect we've all had to wrestle with baffling self-assembly instructions...

6. What a bunch of bright-eyed little cuties...

Not a cricket fan, thought I’d give it a go anyhow, as I live opposite the park and the lads seem to appreciate the images Kelso playing Melrose in the Scottish Borders. A good win for Kelso.

Hi Mike,

These are all excellent 'key moments frozen in time' shots which, together with the expressions of those involved, certainly capture the unfolding drama.

The settings and framing are absolutely spot on and I would imagine any of the participants receiving these would be well impressed (deservedly so).

Well done all-round (including for staying awake!... ) - and thank you for sharing... :)

Catching up with some photos from last month, starting with a couple of male American goldfinches. The first fellow is puffing his beautiful breeding plumage, which has grown in nicely.
20240504_5783.jpg

This second male goldfinch is far behind in the plumage race and will probably not catch up fully, as many males maintain a grey back of the head through the summer. I imagine that this limits his breeding opportunities but can't say for certain.

A male Baltimore oriole in our backyard. These are beautiful birds that we attract by putting out orange slices or grape jam.
20240504_5195.jpg

This male red-breasted woodpecker is the king of the feeder food chain. This somewhat deceptively-named bird (the "red" in the name is the slightly reddish-orange tint you can see on his lower front) is not intimidated by any bird short of a hawk. This guy (and the females too) intimidate blue jays, grackles, starlings, and even the very aggressive red-winged blackbird: nobody want to mess with a bill and skull structure that easily penetrates solid wood!

This is a double-crested cormorant that I photographed swimming in the Cape Cod Canal. The late afternoon sun lit his face and his very cool-looking eye. I still have to process a set of photos where he was catching and eating an eel.

Nice set as usual. I think I'll have to head to the zoo this summer and see if I can get close to your work. I have made a decision. I'm going to shoot with my R7 and 100-500 only all year. No 1.4. I will shoot with the 1.4 on my R6II and 100-500. I might put the TC on the R7 for static bird shots.

To finish the month off I went back to see my buddies with at different body. Last week I had near perfect rare light. A thin veil of cloud just enough to soften and get rid of shadows and yet have some glow. Hard light yesterday.

Hi Don,

A stunning set of nailed on images, all beautifully captured (but the sublime woodpecker shot steals the show).

Well done - and thank you for sharing... :)

My wife and I visited Napa Valley yesterday to pick up our daughter's dog. I managed to get out and take a few photos in Geyserville, but the location really deserves 2 days instead of 2 hours.

Hi Steven,

Well seen and beautifully captured (the leading lines drawing the viewer towards the characterful and mysterious building). The B&W treatment is perfect.

(Of course, the moment you mentioned the Napa Valley, our thoughts were inevitably drawn to the movie 'Bottleshock'... ).

Thank you for sharing - and cheers!... 🥂:)

Thanks. I just noticed that blurry lump on its back. I went through a few more frames and it’s a rock on the shoreline lol. What timing.

Hi Only RF,

I hadn't noticed that either until you mentioned it - now, of course, I can't un-see it... :)

(I wonder what the PS/ LrC healing tools would do with it - still a great image though!).

Same thing for me. I could remove it but I already posted it. Not that critical if it needs to be pointed out.
