What Photography Related Item Have You Bought or Sold This Week?

After years shooting with mirrorless cameras (first Sony and now Canon) I got a DSLR, but not just a DSLR but a more than 10 years old DSLR that does not include Face or Eye Detection: The Canon EOS 5D Mark III.

Why?

Price on DSLR has gone down and a camera that once was sold for more than $3400 you can get it for a little more than $400. In another hand, I have used DSLR in the past so I'm not afraid to go back to use a camera without all the new AI technologies which while they make our life easier sometimes have been proven to have a mind of it's own and do things out of our control, specially AF.

I have to said that I'm enjoying this camera.

The quality of the images coming out of this 14 years old camera is super! AF simple put works. And the low light performance is spectacular.

When I bought my R5 my intention was to sell my DSLRs and, eventually, replace them with - perhaps - another R5, or maybe an R6 or, if I could wait long enough, an R5 Mk II. However, I still have my 5D Mk III. It's been all over the world with me, been my main camera on hundreds of live gigs and it's still so good at what it does! I know that I can pick it up at any time and use it without having to think about which button does what - muscle memory is a wonderful thing! On the other hand, I'm still not fully up to speed with my R5, but that's going to come with practice. In the meantime, I'm going to continue using both old and new technology together.

As an avid birder, I have never been satisfied with relying on my camera alone as a substitute for binoculars. I like to find and identify the birds before further "pursuing" (or not) with the camera. I have not found a good combination of straps/harnesses etc. to aid in carrying both the camera and the binos. One always seems to foul the other at the worst time, or slip off my shoulder etc...until now!
For my upcoming birthday, my wife purchased me the Cotton Carrier GS3 Harness with an extra side holster. This allows me to carry both the camera with attached telephoto (I have R7 with RF 100-400) lens and my 9x45 binos securely, while still keeping my hands free where necessary (climbing logs, fences etc. Got the whole thing put together and fitted last night and it appears to be quite promising.

Just bought my wife the rf100-500. and hopefully selling the Tamron 150 - 600 G2

Only thing left on my 'want' list is the R1 if it ever gets here - so even if I give up motorsport I will have my ultimate setup to see me through retirement.

I have a Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi arriving today. I purchased it mainly to help me track the sun for the solar eclipse on Monday. If I can find clear enough skies, I plan to set my intervalometer and shoot the entire eclipse from first to fourth contact. I'll be doing that with the R6 & RF100-500mm and Thousand Oaks Optical solar filter attached. I also purchased a second solar filter for my R7 & wide angle lens which I plan to use for a landscape series of the eclipse. I'm not sure yet if I want to use my RF24-105 or RF14-35 for the wide angle series. I think that'll depend on exactly where I end up and what the landscape looks like. In addition to the tracker & solar filter, I also purchased 2 magnetic filter mounts to minimize camera movement when I remove the filters during totality.

I know what you're thinking.... "you don't have your spot chosen yet?" No, I haven't!

I'm in southern Wisconsin and will be traveling to wherever totality has the least chance of clouds. The weather keeps changing, so I don't know if I'll be heading south or east for it. That will be what I refer to as a "game time decision", but I've got areas picked out going both directions.

Not strictly within the last week, so if this were a competition I'd be disqualified, but at the recent Photography Show in Birmingham I bought a Canon Pro-300 printer plus lots of Fotospeed paper, a Spyder Printer calibrator and a Kase filter kit. Oh, and I'm currently waiting for the postie to deliver an Epson V600 scanner. Going to be busy...

Sold a couple of R5 bodies. Was unlucky with the freezing issues and decided to cut my losses while I could get good money. Waiting to see how the canon mirrorless landscape develops before committing to another. In the meantime picked up an iPhone 15 pro max to snap with amongst other things.

Yesterday I bought my first RF lens- the 14-35mm f/4. I’ve had my R5 for a couple of years and I thought I would never part with the spectacular EF 16-35 f4. The software correction that is employed to fix the RF 14-35 was always a sore spot for me when considering this lens. But, I hated leaving those extra couple of mm on the table and did not want to cart around an extra prime.

After doing a ton of research, I finally decided to do it and traded in my EF mount 16-35 f4, 200mm f/2 vs 2, and the first L lens I ever bought - the 24-105 is vs 1, to help pay for it.

I still have some trepidation about the new lens - mainly is it really a full 14mm, or is it closer to 15 or 16mm after all of the lens correction? The problem here is the internet. One reviewer claims it is designed to give a 14mm angle after correction, but the next reviewer or forum poster will disagree. I haven’t had a chance to do my own comparison with a 15mm prime I have, but I did take some test shots with the new lens at 14mm. I must say they look pretty good coming out of DXO prime for RAW conversion.

I just hope that I am getting a wider angle and did not give up my favorite wide angle baby, the EF 16-35 f4.

B&H just had the Benro MeFOTO RoadTrip Pro Aluminum Series 1 tripod on sale for $80 (retail $250), and I had to buy one even though I already have a Vanguard Alta Pro 2. The Benro is lighter but has way more features (including a built-in monopod) and folds out from 15.5" to almost 62". I like the Vanguard, but it's just too bulky to carry around, so I'll keep it for indoor stuff.

Today my new Canon RF 16 mm F2.8 STM was delivered to my door. Looks pretty neat on the R6 MK1 and its really light weight. Now I need to go out and start shooting! What suggestions would you have for me to get the most out of this little gem? I mainly shoot cityscapes and landscapes. Thanks in advance.

It’s very good for interiors. PKM-UK’s images from Attingham Hall show some good examples.

I bought the RF 50mm F1.8 from Amazon as they had a good deal a few weeks back. Also got a non Canon lens hood as I was not going to pay their crazy price. I know it's not an L lens but I wanted something nice and light to carry around when I didn't want to lug the heavier gear around. Quite pleased with the results from it though.

I didn't want to buy one but I needed a back up for my R5 before setting of for Costa Rica. It was too far and expensive to go only for my R5 to let me down as it did a year ago. I chose an R7.
Against expectations I really like it, it's not my go to body but it has it's uses.
When I got home I spotted availability of the Rf200-800 so one is ordered and on it's way but will be too late for my next trip as I leave tomorrow.

Decided not to wait for the R5ii and gone for an R3. Ordered some new glass along with it, RF100L macro. If anyone’s got any fast moving bugs to snap let me know..

Peak Design Travel Tripod, Carbon.

I'm particularly sold on the design of the ball head. Tensioning of the head is controlled by a knurled ring that surrounds the entire head given good grip and precise control of the ball. It's not the lightest tripod but may be close to of those that are rated at 20 lbs. holding power. There are a few marketing videos but this longer one is what sold me.

I've found that the tripod is as easy and enjoyable as this video claims:

I just picked up a used RF35mm F1.8 IS STM for what would be the equivalent of 300 USD. Look forward to playing around with it to see if I really like a fast prime at this focal length...and see how the images compare to 35mm from a L-series lens. Sort of a cheap-ish test run.

I wonder if that'd make an interesting thread - I finally found the ideal accessory. I'm hoping the tripod I referred to a few up from your post is The Tripod. I don't mean a thread about best camera or best lens but all the other items that compromise a kit. What a poster thinks is best and why.

My EF24-70/2.8ii just arrived from the refurb store today! Haven't even seen it yet. The price was just too good to pass up. I've been spinning the various 24-X options around in my head for over a month and finally just went with it. I'd rather have an RF, I'd rather have a 24-105/2.8... but this will be great and the price is right.
