I'm getting ready to finally order the RF 100-500mm lens and have been reading old reviews and watching some YT videos just to get up to speed. I saw that there are reports that over time the lens tripod mounting collar stops holding the lens in the position you want, it seems the felt rings on the inside that mate to the lens get compressed and even if you twist the thumb screw tightly the lens tends to not lock into vertical and slips. I read several various posts on forums saying the sent the lens to Canon and it didn't seem to improve the problem.

Anyone else noticed this with their lens?

I see that I-Shoot makes a replacement collar that is supposed to not do this and also has the Arca Swiss mount machined into the foot.

EDIT to add: Also, when the lens is attached to the camera and not on a tripod, I never carry the combo my either the camera body or the lens collar, but rather the lens barrel.

I have used my RF 100-500mm on a regular basis for almost three years and never had an issue with the tripod collar.

Yes. I bought a refurb from canon direct last year. When you used a tripod and rest your arm on the camera it would slightly slip. Just depends on how much force you exerted on the camera body.

So i called canon and they wanted me to send it back to check it and replace it. But they wanted me to send the whole lens back, not just the collar. Well i was having so much fun with the lens that i didnt want to do that, plus i so rarely use the collar it is kind of a non issue for me. Although i do use the collar as a handle sometimes but i never had an issue with it in that usage.

I know…….a wishy washy answer. But i do like the desgn where you can completely remove the collar if you want!

I've had the lens for about 2 years and haven't had that problem. I do a good amount of tripod work with it. One bad thing I *did* once happen was that the collar opened up and I nearly dropped the whole darn thing, but I caught it. Since then it's automatic that I check to make sure the thumb screw is always tight.

I soon swapped out mine for the iShoot soon after my purchase of the lens, not because of any problems with the original, but because I wanted the Arca mount. No problems with the iShoot, other than a small cap covering a screw coming off (doesn't affect anything at all). Also, using a NEEWER Gimbal Tripod Head, the iShoot mount is long enough (it actually looks a little short) to balance my R6M2 with the RF100-500 (even with the 1.4 extender) perfectly.
