Hi RedCobra,

A terrific capture of a wonderful creature - we like the subject separation and excellent background layering too!

Thank you for sharing... :)

P&K
The background was an interesting experiment. I was fooling with several ways to change the bokeh since the background was much more in focus in the original as the thing was shot at f/8 on the R7. This was done by applying the Orton Effect to the background with the bird masked using the TK9 panel in PS Beta.

Hi David,

Wonderful light and a beautiful subject - you have to invest the time and effort to find both - well caught... :)

Hi RedCobra,

Ah, I thought there was something special going on in the background (I do enjoy a dabble with the effects in TK-9!) - thanks for the insight, appreciated.

A gray and overcast day at a Renaissance Faire with a new lens first outting. Nothing "portfolio worthy" but a few fun...

Sunday was our 40th wedding anniversary.
What a stunning image to capture this very special occasion. A big congratulations to you both!

Hi Tim,

A terrific capture of a beautiful creature - excellent detail and subject isolation.

(And what a little cutie! :) ).

Thanks P&K! I was hoping that the nuthatch would land on there as well but not this time unfortunately.

Hi Tim,

Not too long now until I'll be trudging around our local woods in the mud armed with a bag of bird seed and peanuts looking to build some symbiotic relationships with the local avian population (aka Phil's philanthropic photographic bribery... :) ).

Last year there was often a fairly decent line-up of robins, blackbirds, blue/ cold tits and nuthatches.

One for trainspotters! The brand new (and yet to be officially named) loco #8 ‘James Spooner’ - a double Fairlie locomotive - the eighth to run on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway and the fifth to be built entirely at its Boston Lodge workshops. Shown here at Porthmadog Station, Gwynedd, Wales.

(This shot was taken during a recent journey on the railway - more images from which will be coming to this forum soon!).

The original James Spooner loco, built in 1872, was named after the first manager of the railway and was retired in 1928, so we thought - what may our image have looked like back then…

(Shot raw and processed using: Adobe Lightroom Classic/ Photoshop with TK-9 Panels. Re-edited with: DxO FilmPack/ Nik Collection and Topaz Studio 2).

You can find out more about the James Spooner locos (present and past) by clicking Here (interestingly the shot of the loco they've used on this page is dated the same day we were there) and Here. You can read about the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway by clicking Here.

A couple of days ago I was tasked with another attempt at a passport photo for our 2 yr old granddaughter - the first having been rejected for a stray lock of hair across her face, and accidentally discovered a new supermodel...

You might suspect that I'm a tad biased, but I'm not, honest... ;-)

Processed in LRC using various combinations of Adaptive presets, especially pop, and the Portraits: Deep Skin PD04 Yellow preset. I used the Lens Blur feature on the middle shot to reduce the impact of the plug behind her. With a bit more time to play around, I might Photoshop that out completely.

Supermodel, she is! Reminded me of my sessions with my granddaughter fifteen years ago. Later, one of her photographs was included in a book after being selected by the judges.

Hi Gareth,

The future is looking very bright - we suspect you’re going to be kept rather busy for the foreseeable future! 😀

(But what a great way to pursue your hobby).

If the tide's out, it's feeding time!

Southern spring = non-breeding plumage (not that it's evident in this photo!).

Hi David,

Another great capture of a wonderful creature - love the way the depth of field/ focus plays out through this shot, really nice!

It must have been a heavily overcast day pushing most of the tones to probably between 25-200 on the brightness scale. But I am sure it could see all the goodies on its way!

Interesting technique, and gave a very nice composition.

We stayed in a wonderful old house in Sablet, Provence. The house was built in the early 1700's but went under a major refurbishment a few years ago. It's within the old fort like walls that kept the barbarians out at one time, the walls are2-3 feet thick and the ceilings have these wonderful old wooden beams. We did this trip with my oldest sister and her husband, she was a French teacher for her career so who better to go to France with than her. My French was learned in high school in the early 70's so not too good.

I like doing editorial shots of some of our day to day existence. The kitchen seemed to be the room we gathered in most of the time, very cozy and had a nice vibe.

A few photos from the first day of our October leaf peeping trip to New Hampshire and Vermont. We had a great time but we had to work to find the fall color. Portions of Vermont were hit by massive flooding over the Summer and those sections also had leaf fungus issues, plus it was unseasonably warm, which tends to misalign the timing of color change. But it made us explore new areas.

First up, a photo of the Milky Way from a viewpoint on the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire, taken just as we arrived. The position of the Milky Way is not ideal at this time of year (low and descending in the direction of sunset), and clouds were starting to roll in, but I thought the lighting on the clouds worked for this photo.

The next morning was sunny and we photographed Jobs Pond, a location we found after our standard go-to places in Vermont had green or brown foliage.

Bald Hill Pond, another new location for us. If you look closely you can see a fire tower at the top of the hill/mountain.
20231002_0860+0865_FS.jpg

Norton Pond, yet another new location for us. The search for color drove us to the northern extremes of Vermont and New Hampshire. This is only a few miles south of the Canadian Border

Some nice color running along a railroad line close to Norton Pond

An HDR composite photo of a small river called the Jay Branch
20231002_1604-1608_HDR.jpg

We had a nice sunset at Lake Willoughby, a spot that usually has wonderful fall color but had virtually none this year. But it is a nice place for sunset photography
20231002R7_8301.jpg

The last photo is the MIlky Way over Lake Willoughby in Vermont. There is still unavoidable residual light from sunset and some light cloudiness, but it does define the hills and mountains around the lake, with some home lights as well

I hope to post some more photos from our trip soon
