Often times, we get a cool "thing", open the box, and and start playing. We sometimes forget to RTFM. Then we have questions that could have been answered (or need not be) if only we had read the manual. While I have no explanation about manuals for marriage, I "can" share a link with you about your passion that is the R5 mirrorless camera.

Absolutely consider opening the link when you need to spend several minutes in the bathroom or just have time to crack open your brain to pour more knowledge in it. It makes great reading material AND can help you get gooder at using this very expensive piece of equipment we have invested in! Well worth the time!

If you missed the link above, here it is...https://cam.start.canon/en/C003/manual/c003.pdf

I keep the pdf file saved on my phone, iPads, and computers. Internet and cell service can get sketchy quite frequently, and it's usually those down times I feel like reading the manual. My cell service at home runs on a micro tower linked to my internet service, so when I'm down, I'm totally down. I can't even hot spot.

I like having them on my devices too. Especially with firmware updates it is great to have an updated manual.

I have a pdf file down loaded. During my three months wait for my R5 I purchased a wire bound (3 books) from the EOS Magazine shop to get prepared. I have done this for all my previous 5D's as for me it's so much easier to read a book.

Me too. Got this PDF on5 devices.

There are several places in the manual that tells you what to do but fails to tell why or if there is a better setting

As someone who has written technical manuals for about 40 years now I find some comfort in these post. I must however state that many manuals, Canon's included are not very well composed for newcomers to the "sport". The new cameras offer very nice features, some of which are lacking in explanation for even the experienced users, hence the questions. What I find useful for me at least is reading the manuals and spending a lot of time perusing the plethora of YouTube videos that attempt to explain these new features. Most often the lack of a good foundational explanation of the principles that these functions automate or control is the issue.

A good example of this is to the best of my knowledge the configuration of two back button focus controls for the R5 and R6. I do not think that you will find this almost essential feature configuration in the Canon manual, I may be wrong, if so please let me know where it is. Another example is a concise and easily understood example of all of the autofocus cases and how best to determine the best use of each. It's even hard to find accurate and complete examples of this information on the web. Most videos by very experienced photographers, who have used the Canon cameras for years often do not agree or simple end up explaining that this is what they use so you should as well.

Most of us charge ahead in an attempt to take the castle as we discover it's weaknesses and our own. That is life.

Training is also a necessity for most in addition to the manual/user guide. Join forums like this. JMHO ;)

There are so few books on the R5, no reviews about the books and rather pricy

Looks like trial and error for now

I have often found that manuals don't, in any way, fill in the gaps. Much is lost by purely telling you what a feature is. No explanation. No context. If you pulled out a manual from 1954, you will read WHY certain features exist.

Yes, YouTube has become a terrific way to learn about many many things. I really wish there were a way to provide the detail needed to provide the info that the manuals show, with the context to help you understand "why."

The only problem is you need a f#’$king college education to understand it!🤔😀
