Hi all,

I enjoy using my R6ii coupled with the 100-500 lens for wildlife, but on occasions, I find it just a bit too short at 500mm and was thinking of investing in the 1.4x extender. Is anyone on here using that combo and if so are you happy with the results? I have also had a look at Canons 800mm but didn't fancy being stuck with f11 permanently! Did a quick search but couldn't find anything.

Cliff.

I don't think I've seen any posts on the 100-500 with 1.4x and the R6 II but here's one with the R5 that you might find helpful:

Here is another thread

Consensus at another forum was that cropping might give better IQ than use of the 1.4x TC for zoom lenses, but that the TC would probably win with the big white primes.

I have the 2x RF converter and have used it with the RF100-500, it is great for close up work (1-10m) for longer shots I would use the 100-500 without a converter and crop the image, I have ordered the 1.4x for a trip to Iceland as having tried it I like the image quality and the weight comparsion to the 2x. BTW £399 from einfinity at present if that helps :)

This shot was taken with a Canon R6MK2 with 100-500mm lens and the 1.4 rf extender.

Cliff.

I definitely recommend it. Just be aware of its limitations: not a low-light performer (but better than expected, coupled with a camera like the R6ii and NR software) and the 300mm low-end restriction.

I am.

Got this one flying through reeds. Fast bird.

I use the 1.4x on the R6 quite often with both the 100-500 and 100-400. Attached are a few sample images.
Loses a tad bit of image quality, but not too bad. I often touch up with LR noise reduction and PS spot sharpening.
I also turn off the " Lens drive when AF impossible" and that helps a bit when focusing.

Would imagine the R6ii would be a little better yet.

They have been quite plentiful via Canon refurbished in the states at $399.

Some fantastic images there guys and some really helpful comments. I think my mind is made up... I'm going for it. probably keep my eyes open for a used one first but I'll see what's on offer.

Thanks, everyone,
Cliff.
