Your R System Images - November 2024

Still playing catch-up a little bit, so images from our (not particularly recent - but next on the list) visit to Patterdale in the Lake District, Cumbria, England.

[Note: Photography is not permitted inside Dalemain Mansion itself - but the guided tour is interesting and fun. Patterdale Hall is not open to the public].

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PL Elite/ ViewPoint/ Nik Collection, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs Studio 2. Compilations feature: R7 - Karen and R5 - Phil).

1. There is evidence of a settlement at Dalemain in Saxon times and a Pele tower was built on the site during the reign of King Henry II. The old hall itself dates back to the 12th century.

2. In 1679, Sir Edward Hasell purchased Dalemain and it has remained in the family since. The Georgian front, built to enclose the old house within a central courtyard, was completed by his son in 1744 and the garden façade rebuilt in 1748 to match the new front. Founded in 2005, the annual 'World's Original Marmalade Awards and Festival' is held at Dalemain. (Delicious, locally crafted marmalades can be purchased from the on-site shop at eye-watering prices).

3. Meanwhile, Patterdale Hall dates back to 1624, when the Lordship of Patterdale was purchased from the Threlkeld Family by Joan Mounsey of Greystoke for her son John. Later, in 1848, William Marshall commissioned a much grander house which replaced (most) of the old structure. The bell ensures a prompt start!

4. Today the Patterdale Hall Estate is an Outdoor Pursuits Centre. Facilities include a touring camper van site (where we stayed in Frank!) and lodges which afford access the otherwise private estate grounds/ waterfall woods. (There is also private access available to a small area of shore on nearby Ullswater lake).

5. View across Ullswater (a lake around 7 miles long and 0.75 miles wide) towards Helvellyn (3,116ft in elevation, the 3rd highest mountain in the Lake District).

6. Lunch time - a welcome 'comfy' rock to sit on with a pleasant view on offer. (Note the lake cruiser is blended from another R system photo - so, genuine-ish).

The biggest bird in the sky!

Emirates, A380-800 jet. As soon as I hit the back button focus it went straight for the nose of the jet and never stopped tracking it.

Hi Chris,

A nailed on BIF. You have to ask yourself, how does that work then?...

Physics aside, a terrific capture of a remarkable bit of kit and quite a sight to behold - thank you for sharing... :)

Yes, I am kind of tired of ducks but they seem to be the main birds down at the riverfront near my home. These ones came in quite close so at 800mm filled the frame. View attachment 33028View attachment 33029View attachment 33030View attachment 33031View attachment 33032
Hi Chris,

You can never have enough ducks (well, unless they invade your home and refuse to leave...) - and what a bunch of cuties you've captured here!

Beautiful colours and rich with detail.

Thank you for sharing... :)
