From what I've read it increases during the winter when many chaffinches migrate from Europe. It can pass from bird to bird via surfaces so cleaning garden feeders is recommended. Or course many birds will be feeding from multiple gardens and feeders so it's a difficult one to control unfortunately.I see a lot of mutations like that on the birds at our feeder. Someone said it could be our bad hygiene at the feeders. Such a shame.
